On an open software basic construction platform, StarFlow workflow management platform utilizes the J2EE technology platform, complies with MVC software system mode and object-oriented design concept, implements best practices of the evolving agile software development methodology, and makes scientific use of software components to improve the reusability of codes and initially create a business basic platform implementing automated flow management. StarFlow workflow management platform consists of 5 components as follows:
Workflow Engine -- StarFlow Engine
StarFlow workflow engine is the service software that provides the operating environment for business process instances and node instances in the workflow management system and is the core of the workflow management system. Key functions of StarFlow workflow engine are as follows:
- To interpret the process definition:
- To create process instances (manual creation, automatic timed creation and automatic periodic creation);
- To control the creation, activation, hanging-up and termination of the process instance;
- To control the activity instances (creation, operation, hanging-up, resumption and termination of the activity instances);
- To route among activities, including the control of sequences or parallel operations and instance lifecycle;
- To control the work item (creation, hanging-up, resumption and termination of the work item);
- To provide user interaction interface, define the allocation of work items for users and remind users of the arrival of work items;
- To maintain workflow control data and related data;
- To transfer workflow related data to/from the application/user;
- Scheduling of external applications and services;
- System log service

StarFlowDesigner adopts visual display and pull-down operation and control and can rapidly customize the business process. It complies with the WFMC-XML Process Definition Language (XPDL) specifications of the international workflow alliance, adopts 100% Java technology to make the design and development of graphic interface and business processing logic, adopts XML Schema to implement model storage and data exchange, and supports the permanent storage of model data in the large back-end relation database.
